The Wonder League Robotics Competition Is Launching!

Oct 11, 2018

The fourth annual Wonder League Robotics Competition (WLRC) is launching today — literally setting sail, with this year’s ocean-themed missions! Last year, the WLRC had over 7,100 teams from 63 countries participate in our free virtual competition. Read more about last year’s Top Ten Teams. And this year, our latest robot, Cue, is joining in on the fun, so we’ve added a third age category — which means we are now awarding THREE $5,000 STEM grant grand prizes. So how does it work?

REGISTER AS A COACH

As a coach, you’re tasked with recruiting a team of one to five kids, ages 6-8, 9-11, or 12-14, to work through five creative problem-solving missions using Dash & Dot or Cue. Once registered, you will have access to a suite of resources in our new “Coaches’ Corner.” You download the missions for the kids to work on anytime from today until January 18, 2019. They can collaborate on one mission or all five! Those who complete all five can then submit towards an invite for the month-long Invitational Round in March 2019. During that month, invited teams work on one last mission to compete for one of the three $5,000 STEM grant grand prizes. Did we mention that this program is free?

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

No experience is needed for the coach or for the team members to participate in the Wonder League Robotics Competition. Coaching is open to parents and educators, and our coaches tell us that the WLRC is a great way to hook kids into coding and robotics with real-world science and technology challenges. Plus, coaches find support through an

exclusive global community, where they share advice and best practices.

I can’t believe how much we learned this year. The growth of our team was enormous. The children absolutely LOVED coming to WLRC after school each Friday. They learned to work together, listen to other ideas, speak up, share, problem solve and persevere and never give up! This activity was my favorite part of my year too! – Coach Lisa Morgan, Detroit, MI

We love hearing about all the collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking that teams engage in throughout the competition. In addition to learning fundamental coding and robotics skills, the teams are working together to set goals, reflect on their work, iterate, and tell their stories. The missions are designed to not only have real-world application but a social good angle, which has appealed to all kids — 46% of our participants are girls! Plus, the missions have multiple solutions, so kids’ imaginations really flourish and shine.

MAKE WAVES

This year’s competition missions take place on our vast seas, where teams are asked to navigate and explore our oceans while conducting research and daring rescues. Come aboard for some smooth sailing and seaworthy experiences. Join this year’s Wonder League Robotics Competition, and then tell a friend how they can sign up a team today. Registration is open now through December 31, 2018. Anchors aweigh!
